This week, we welcomed Pastor David Platt for Week Four of our ROMANS series. Through an encounter with the Word itself, he called the Church away from casual, cultural Christianity to become a people who tremble at God’s Word, repent, believe, and live according to its truth. What is your response to hearing the Word of God?
PRAY: Spend two minutes in silent prayer. After two minutes, have someone pray for your time together as a group.
READ: Nehemiah 8:1-6. Invite different group members to read the passage out loud, two or three times. Each time, use a different Bible translation to allow for the Spirit to highlight key points through different wordings and sentence structures.
Q1 – Take a moment to reflect on your experience with Sunday’s reciting of God’s Word. How were you compelled to worship through the reading of God’s Word?
Q2 – When was the last time you remember having an unforgettable encounter with
God through His Word? What were you reading, and what did the Lord reveal to you?
Q3 – In Nehemiah 8:5–6, we see God’s people respond to the reading of Scripture with worship and reverence. What expressions of worship are most familiar to you? What expressions make you the most uncomfortable? Why do you think that is?
Q4 – David Platt challenged us that the bar for Christianity in our culture is very low. What is the standard of discipleship in your life right now? What would it look like for you personally to raise the standard of what it means to follow Jesus?
Q5 – How do you approach the Word of God when you spend time with Him? Does your time in His Word lead you toward worship and an encounter with God, or does it often feel like a task? What might God be inviting you into as you grow in your hunger for His Word?
Q6 – Romans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. What areas of your life are currently being shaped more by the culture around you than by the Word of God? What would it look like to let God’s Word reshape your thinking in that area?
