A Tragic Exchange
Miles Fidell

This week in our ROMANS series, our Senior Pastor, Miles Fidell, continued through Romans 1, confronting the tragic exchange at the heart of idolatry: trading the beholding of God’s glory for consuming images of created things.

PRAY: Spend two minutes in silent prayer. After two minutes, have someone pray for your time together as a group.

READ: Romans 1:18-28. Invite different group members to read the passage out loud, two or three times. Each time, use a different Bible translation to allow for the Spirit to highlight key points through different wordings and sentence structures.

Q1 – Growing up, what was your perception of God’s character? How does understanding the wrath of God rightly reshape the way we view Him as our Heavenly Father?

Q2 – What are you most afraid of? How might that fear be causing you to believe lies or exchange God’s truth for something else?

Q3 – A tragic exchange occurs when we trade beholding the glory of the immortal God for consuming images of created things. What created thing are you tempted to worship instead of the immortal God? Why do you think those things have such a pull on you?

Q4 – What did you learn when you were younger that you needed to have or achieve to be successful or safe? How might that belief be a lie that has shaped what you worship or where you find your identity?

Q5 – What Gospel truth from Scripture speaks against that lie, and how can you intentionally pray into and live from that truth?

Q6 – Contemplative prayer while communing with God transforms us more into the image of Christ. When was the last time you simply slowed down and spent unhurried time with God in order to behold His glory? What has that kind of communion with Him produced in your life? What keeps you from making it a regular rhythm?

CHALLENGE - SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION

Memorize Romans 12 this week. Break the chapter into the sections below and spend a few minutes each day reading each day's verses ten times, writing each day’s verses ten times, and repeating the verses until you can say them without looking. At the end of the week, see if you can recite the entire chapter from memory.

●  Day 1: Romans 12:1–3

●  Day 2: Romans 12:4–6

●  Day 3: Romans 12:7–9

●  Day 4: Romans 12:10–12

●  Day 5: Romans 12:13–15

●  Day 6: Romans 12:16–18

●  Day 7: Romans 12:19–21 + recite the whole chapter

As you memorize, ask the Lord to show you how these words are meant to shape the way you live, worship, and love others.
